The state of California requires automobile drivers to purchase bodily injury liability coverage and property damage liability coverage. At a minimum, the driver must have bodily injury liability coverage of at least $15,000 per person injured in any one accident and $30,000 total for all persons injured in any one accident. Additionally, the driver must have a minimum of $5,000 property damage liability coverage for the destruction of the property of others as a result of an automobile accident. This is often represented as 15/30/5 coverage. California also has a low-cost policy program called the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan. The limits for those participating in this plan are represented as 10/20/3.
Automobile drivers have the option of purchasing uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. If uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage is purchased, underinsured motorist coverage must also be purchased. This type of insurance is meant to cover bodily injuries caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver. Even though this coverage is optional, if a person chooses to purchase uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, the coverage purchased must be at least equal to the amount of required bodily injury coverage. If more than the required amount of bodily injury coverage is purchased, any underinsured motorist coverage purchased may be purchased at a lesser amount.
