New Jersey Auto Insurance Attorney

The state of New Jersey requires automobile drivers to purchase bodily injury liability coverage and property damage liability coverage. At a minimum, the driver must have bodily injury liability coverage of at least $15,000 per person injured in any one accident and $30,000 total for all persons injured in any one accident. Additionally, the driver must have a minimum of $5,000 property damage liability coverage for the destruction of the property of others as a result of an automobile accident. This is often represented as 15/30/5 coverage. New Jersey state law requires the purchase of personal injury protection coverage of at least $15,000 to cover reasonable and necessary medical expenses sustained by the policyholder or the policyholder's passengers, without regard to fault. PIP coverage may not exceed $250,000 per person to pay for permanent or significant injury. Under this coverage, income continuation benefits, essential service benefits, and funeral benefits can also be purchased.

New Jersey motorists may choose between purchasing standard auto insurance or basic auto insurance. All automobile drivers purchasing standard auto insurance must purchase uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. This type of insurance is meant to cover bodily injuries caused by an uninsured driver. New Jersey follows a Choice No-Fault system. Under this system, drivers may choose to reject the standard No-Fault system and, instead, retain the right to sue under the general theory of tort law (based on demonstrating negligence of another) for injuries sustained in an auto accident.
